On November 14, 2024, the Institute of Crisis Management Studies (ICMS) had the privilege of hosting Lt. Gen. Balananda Sharma (Retd.), the esteemed founding principal of ICMS and a respected founding trustee. This significant occasion was also graced by our Chair, the retired Inspector General of the Armed Police Force Nepal, Sanat Kumar Basnet, whose presence added depth to this event. The lecture provided students with invaluable insights into the complex dynamics of Nepal's peace process and the integration of military forces, offering a rare, firsthand look into a pivotal period in Nepal’s history.
The event began with an opening address by Dr. Kishor Adhikari, our campus chief, who warmly welcomed Lt. Gen. Sharma and introduced him to the audience. Dr. Adhikari highlighted Lt. Gen. Sharma's extensive contributions to peacebuilding and crisis management, emphasizing his instrumental role as coordinator during Nepal’s peace process.
In his lecture, Lt. Gen. Sharma began by setting the stage with a detailed analysis of the pre-crisis context. He elaborated on the factors that led Nepal into a challenging period of political transition and conflict, presenting a nuanced view of the socio-political and economic pressures at play. His reflections provided the audience with a deeper understanding of the gravity of the situation and the need for a comprehensive peace strategy.
Lt. Gen. Sharma continued by sharing insights into his experiences as the coordinator responsible for implementing Nepal’s peace process. He discussed the complex, high-stakes tasks he was assigned, from brokering agreements to facilitating the integration of armed forces, balancing political sensitivities, and fostering trust among stakeholders. He reflected on both the achievements and ongoing challenges, sharing that while significant progress had been made, the peace process in Nepal remains an incomplete journey, with more steps necessary for lasting stability.
The lecture concluded with a lively Q&A session where students and faculty members engaged in a thought-provoking exchange with Lt. Gen. Sharma.
